With or Without Glass: A Series of Comparisons

With or Without Glass is a darkroom series about comparisons. Taking inspiration from Terry Evan's Prairie Specimens project, I began by collecting natural plant objects from my local landscape. I photographed these objects in their natural habitat as well as in the studio using 35mm film. I experimented, and found different meanings with each context in which I photographed the plant matter. My trials with the plants lead to the final prints of the series; two photograms of each object making a comparison. In each comparison one photogram depicts the plant object without any other form besides the negative space, as well as a second photogram which shows the objects in relation to a glass vessel of some kind. The work exemplifies the idea that once the natural world is altered it has the potential to hold new meaning.
